Landscaping Waste Guide: Soil, Turf, Timber and Green Waste
A landscaping waste skip bin must match the materials produced by the job. Pruned branches are light and bulky, while soil, rock, pavers and concrete are dense. Treated timber, synthetic turf and mixed demolition waste can have different disposal requirements again.
ACE provides options for garden waste removal, but the correct category depends on the full load. Use the skip bin guide and confirm your list before booking.
Separate clean green waste
Leaves, small branches, shrubs and garden clippings can often follow a green-waste pathway when they are free from contamination. Keep soil, plastic pots, treated timber, garden edging, food waste and building rubble out of a clean green load unless the provider specifically approves them.
Cut branches into manageable lengths and load them carefully. Large trunks, stumps and roots should be discussed because size and weight can affect the available option.
Estimate soil by weight as well as volume
A small-looking mound of soil can become a very heavy load. Tell the provider whether it is clean natural soil, clay, sand or mixed fill and whether it contains turf, roots, brick, concrete or other material.
Never place suspected contaminated soil or asbestos-affected material in a general bin. If the site history or visible debris creates doubt, arrange appropriate testing and professional advice before excavation continues.
Identify hard landscaping materials
Pavers, bricks, concrete, tiles and rocks need to be declared when booking. Dense materials may require a dedicated heavy-waste option and should be spread evenly across the bin base. Do not fill a large bin with heavy material simply because space remains.
Keep reusable pavers or stone aside before machinery begins. Salvaged material may be useful elsewhere on the property or suitable for resale.
Treat timber and synthetic products separately
Untreated timber may be handled differently from painted, engineered or chemically treated wood. Synthetic turf, rubber underlay, irrigation pipe and plastic garden products are not green waste. Create separate piles and explain them when arranging the bin.
- Green clippings and branches
- Clean soil or excavated material
- Concrete, brick, pavers and rock
- Timber and fencing
- Plastic, synthetic turf and general waste
Protect access during the landscaping work
Place the bin where workers or machinery can reach it without blocking the street, neighbours or emergency access. Consider wet weather, soft ground and overhead branches. Keep the truck route clear when pallets, plants and equipment arrive.
ACE lists bin dimensions and typical uses on its services page. For a mixed landscaping job, send the team a materials list and site details. Accurate sorting can reduce contamination and make the project waste easier to manage.
